Wild and beautiful
Whether the cliffs in Ahrenshoop, the largest national park in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania or the 14 kilometer long western beach, the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula has a lot of nature to offer. There are many untouched stretches of landscape to explore and experience here. The west beach has hardly been developed for tourism to this day. This means you are closer to nature here than anywhere else. Many places on the peninsula can only be visited on foot, by carriage or bicycle. Cars are not necessary here.
Geography of the peninsula
The peninsula actually consists of 3 parts: the Fischland, which is historically still Mecklenburg, the Darß, which already belongs to Western Pomerania (the border runs along the Grenzweg in Ahrenshoop) and the Zingst peninsula. The Fischland is an erosion coast and would certainly have already disappeared without hydraulic engineering interventions. The northernmost point of the peninsula is the Darßer Ort with its lighthouse, which is best visited on foot, by bike or in a horse-drawn carriage to get the best view of the open Baltic Sea.
Artistic Ahrenshoop
The Baltic Sea resort forms the transition from Fischland to the Darß and thus also the connection between Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania. At the end of the 19th century, some German artists founded a painting school and artists' colony in the tranquil town. Countless German and international painters, sculptors and other artists have found a retreat here for over 130 years. There are many paintings that are about or inspired by Ahrenshoop and the peninsula. The Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula is currently not very easy to reach by public transport, but once you have arrived, you can safely leave your car in the parking lot. Here you can reach your destination better by bike or on a hike, often faster and with less stress.
