The bustling port city
With 40.000 inhabitants, Świnoujście is the only "real" city on the island of Usedom. It represents a more modern contrast to the historic spa architecture of the rest of the island. Only the former spa districts, with their restored spa villas, are reminiscent of the earlier times of the Baltic Sea resort. Here the historical is paired with futuristic new hotel buildings right on the promenade.

A former Prussian fortress at the mouth of the Świna, designed to protect the sea route from the Oder and Świna to the Baltic Sea. The origin of the fortress was laid out as a Świnoujście ski jump during the Thirty Years' War. All parts of the fortress can be visited through the Swine Tunnel, which has been open since June 2023. Alternatively, you can walk to the east side of Świnoujście via the city ferry. The fortress is called Fort Aniola in Poland and is said to resemble the Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome.

The beautiful harbor town is very easy to explore on foot or by bike. As do both islands on which the city is located. Since the tunnel was opened, there has been less traffic jam on both sides, thus saving a lot of CO2.
