At a glance

Cologne is colourful, loud, trendy and often in fancy dress. The city on the Rhine is always good for a surprise, which makes it a great choice for an unusual team event. "Kölle Alaaf", the carnival cry of this carnival stronghold, is known far beyond the city limits.

But the revellers and the "fifth season" are only part of it. Cologne has a rich history, a lively city life and countless sights. Visit Cologne Cathedral, wander through the old town or go out for a drink in the pubs at night. An incentive trip or conference here inspires people and strengthens team spirit and motivation.

Cologne, my colourful city

Cologne is over 2,000 years old and the cultural centre of the region. Its landmark is the Gothic cathedral, which you can see from every direction as you arrive in the city. Cologne has been the seat of an archbishopric since the Middle Ages.

The city is an important location for the chemical and automotive industries. Above all, though, it is famous for its street carnival. It draws millions of visitors into the city and the surrounding area.

Carnival

Cologne's carnival has a long tradition. Since the Middle Ages, the people of Cologne have been driving out winter here and celebrating exuberantly on the eve of Lent. The season, also called the "fifth season", begins on 11 November at 11:11 am on the Alter Markt. It ends when Lent begins before Easter, and the highlight is the Rose Monday parade.

On the night before Ash Wednesday, the neighbourhoods burn the Nubbel. This straw figure marks the end of the carnival season. Across the districts the revellers celebrate in pubs and on the streets. On carnival Sunday the school and neighbourhood parades (Schull- und Veedelszöch) wind through the city, and the best walking groups and floats win prizes.

What Cologne brings to your event

Rhineland warmth is a fine first handshake to open your event. The many venues and the setting on the Rhine show the city between old and new. Cologne is also Germany's media capital. It's a place everyone should visit at least once in their life.

  • adebar organised a culinary city tour in Rostock for our annual management conference. The tour went smoothly, and our guide was incredibly likeable and informative. Although we only mentioned our wish for a Schwedeneisbecher (a local ice cream sundae) at short notice, this stop was built into the tour. That shows how spontaneous, individual and client-focused adebar is.
