At a glance

The Saxon state capital thrives on its history and yet stays curious. Its skyline on the Elbe, with the Semperoper, the Frauenkirche and the Zwinger, is famous. Its architecture and cultural scene draw visitors from all over the world.

The Frauenkirche tells the story of its destruction in the Second World War and its reconstruction. For many, it is a symbol of how Dresden gets back on its feet after setbacks.

The cultural scene ranges from first-class museums, theatres and concert halls to contemporary galleries. Dresden's Striezelmarkt is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. Every year, visitors come to the city from all over the world just for it.

Dresden, the radiant city

Architectural monuments, a wide range of culture and its location on the Elbe bring visitors to Dresden from all over the world.

  • History

Dresden has a long and eventful history. The city was first mentioned in records in the 13th century. Later, the Saxon electors and kings held court here. The Semperoper, the Frauenkirche, the Zwinger and the Residenzschloss still bear witness to that today.

In the Second World War, Dresden was heavily bombed and many historic buildings were destroyed. After decades of reconstruction, they stand once again in all their former glory.

  • The Elbe and the Großer Garten

The Elbe shapes the mood of the city. On the Elbe meadows you can go for a walk, cycle or have a picnic. The Großer Garten is an extensive park in the middle of the city. There you can relax, go boating or visit Dresden Zoo.

  • Dresden as a destination for groups

Old town lanes, Baroque buildings and the countryside on the city's doorstep are all close together in Dresden. Add to that a welcoming atmosphere. So every group finds its own programme, whether they are into culture or would rather be out and about.
