At a glance

Jena is also known as the City of Light. For more than 150 years it has stood for innovation and progress in optics and photonics. Carl Zeiss, Ernst Abbe and later Otto Schott laid the foundations of Europe's optical industry here. And that is exactly where your incentive trip could take you.

Science is only one side of the story, though. The city on the Saale is a paradise for active people. The Saalehorizontale offers lots of trails and viewpoints, on foot or by bike. It's a great place for your team to switch off.

Perhaps Jena will inspire you just as it once inspired Friedrich Schiller. He lived here and wrote what is probably his best-known work, "Mary Stuart", in Jena. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a welcome guest at Schiller's garden house, and you can still follow in their footsteps today. In this Thuringian city, history, science, nature and literature all come together.

Jena

  • Jena, City of Light

Carl Zeiss, Ernst Abbe and Otto Schott laid the foundations for optics and photonics in Germany here. To this day Jena is regarded as a European research centre in these fields. "City of Light" stands for its bright minds. It refers to universities whose research sheds light into the dark. And to world-famous high-tech firms and young companies that work with light and study it.

  • Lively Jena

Night owls, foodies and music lovers all get their money's worth in Jena. This young city has charming bars, a pub mile in the Wagnergasse and many socio-cultural centres. Have a drink on the banks of the Saale at the Strand 22 beach bar or spend a lively evening in the Musikkeller. Boredom simply isn't an option here.

  • Experiencing nature

Jena lies in the valleys of the Saale and its tributaries. All around rise distinctive hilltops and mountains with forests and shell limestone slopes. There is plenty of nature within the city too, for example in the Oberaue park. This nature reserve, made up of three adjoining meadows and park areas, is ideal for sport, games and relaxation.

Plant lovers should visit Germany's second-oldest botanical garden. Around 10,000 plants from every climate zone on earth grow across its 4.5 hectares.

  • What Jena has in store for your group

This city in the middle Saale valley combines culture, science and nature. You can follow the trail of Zeiss and Abbe, immerse yourself in Schiller's literature or hike the Saalehorizontale. Thuringian specialities round off your incentive.
