At a glance

Leipzig is the largest city in Saxony and has plenty to offer its visitors. The motto of your incentive trip: "Mein Leipzig lob' ich mir" (my Leipzig is the place for me). Goethe himself wrote that Leipzig was a "little Paris" that shapes its people.

The city has a long history as a cultural centre. Famous musicians such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Richard Wagner worked here. To this day Leipzig is a city of poets and thinkers, a place where people enjoy learning more about the past.

At the same time, Leipzig is modern and full of new ideas. The Leipzig Book Fair is known worldwide and opens its doors to authors and book lovers every year. Large green spaces such as the Rosental and Clara-Zetkin-Park give the city a pleasant climate and plenty of room to breathe.

Popular stops include the Monument to the Battle of the Nations, St Thomas Church and the City-Hochhaus, known locally as the "Uniriese". We've already put together a few ideas for you.

My Leipzig is the place for me

  • Getting there and getting around

Leipzig sits at the centre of the motorway network, connected via the A9, the A14 and the A38 (Leipzig to Göttingen). You can reach the different districts directly from the junctions. Leipzig/Halle Airport is located at the Schkeuditz interchange (A9/A14).

The main station in the city centre is a good starting point for exploring. From there the "Bimmel" takes you comfortably to every part of the city. That's what the locals call the tram.

  • Capital of music

Leipzig is considered Germany's capital of music and one of the best-known music cities in Europe. Johann Sebastian Bach, Richard Wagner and Robert Schumann all worked here. Wagner was born in Leipzig and began his musical training here.

The St Thomas Boys Choir is one of the oldest choirs in the world. Bach once directed it himself, and the choir still sings several times a week in St Thomas Church. The Leipzig Music Trail leads you through the city centre, past the places where the composers lived and worked.

  • The Spinnerei

At the beginning of the 20th century it was the largest cotton mill in continental Europe. Since the start of the 21st century it has been one of the most interesting places for contemporary art and culture in Europe. There are around a hundred artists' studios and fourteen galleries. Add to that workshops, architecture and design offices, and jewellery and fashion makers.

Painters, photographers, sculptors, media artists and conceptual artists work on the site. Many of them enjoy chatting with visitors.
