At a glance

Just before Hanover lies the former royal residence town of Celle, home to the largest and most compact ensemble of half-timbered houses in the world. Small cafés and rustic restaurants line the lanes, with patches of green in between. As the southern gateway to the Lüneburg Heath, Celle has peace and adventure right next to each other.

More than 500 lovingly restored half-timbered houses stand in the town, yet it never feels like a museum. Life happens in the old town, surrounded by gardens and parks. There are many restaurants, owner-run boutiques and places for art and culture.

Celle, the gateway to the Lüneburg Heath

  • Südheide Nature Park

    Just a few kilometres north of Celle, the Südheide Nature Park begins. Across more than 480 square kilometres, heathland alternates with extensive forests. So much open landscape leaves room for supporting programmes and team building of every kind. The dense network of hiking and cycling trails can be used all year round.

  • Wienhausen Abbey

    The daughter-in-law of Henry the Lion founded the abbey in the 13th century. It lies about 20 minutes from Celle and is one of the six Lüneburg Heath convents. All six are convents for women, built in the splendid style of the Baroque and Renaissance.

    In the so-called Nuns' War of the 16th century, the Catholic nuns resisted Protestantism for more than three decades. Duke Ernest of Brunswick had imposed it on the convents. In the end, their resistance was in vain.

    Celle is a highlight of any trip to the Lüneburg Heath. Alongside the half-timbered ensemble you will find modern Bauhaus architecture, the Ducal Palace with its palace theatre and various museums. Town, culture and nature are close together.
