At a glance

"Versatile, authentic, unique" is the slogan of this fishing village by the sea. With fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, you might think it is the back of beyond. Far from it. Since the 19th century, Büsum has been the third-largest holiday resort on Schleswig-Holstein's North Sea coast, after Sankt Peter-Ording and Westerland.

Büsum lies only 7 m above sea level. Until 1585 it was an island in its own right with several fishing villages. Storm surges and strong winds pushed the island ever closer to the mainland, until in 1585 it finally became part of it. It has stayed that way ever since.

Büsum, where the mudflats begin

  • Wadden Sea

Büsum is considered the gateway to the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Every twelve hours the water recedes at low tide and exposes the mudflats. Hardly any landscape in the world changes as much under the influence of the tides.

The Wadden Sea has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2009. It stretches for more than 500 km along the German and Dutch coasts. More than 10,000 species of plants and animals live here, some of them nowhere else.

One tip for your group is the Büsum mudflat run with music, led by the "Wattpräsident" (Mudflat President). There is dancing in the middle of the mudflats, and in the egg-and-spoon race or the tug of war everyone's strength counts. At the water's edge, the Wattpräsident baptises all participants. That makes you (un)official Büsum mudflat runners.

  • Büsum shrimps

North Sea shrimps used to be seen as poor people's food. Today the brown shrimps, simply called "Krabben" on the North Sea coast, are a delicacy in demand all over the country. At the end of the 19th century, shrimp fishing was one of the village's main sources of income. Today it belongs more to its history.

Even so, you can still head out from Büsum on a shrimp cutter, catch the shrimps and peel them yourself. Then into a bread roll they go. Enjoy!

  • The North Sea for your team

An incentive trip to Büsum takes the pace down a notch. Your team experiences the tides and nature, far from the hustle and bustle of the city. Nature and culture in one place give new energy and a chance to grow together as a group. Walk barefoot through the World Heritage Site and let the cool breeze blow around your nose.

What our clients say

  • adebar organised a culinary city tour in Rostock for our annual management conference. The tour went smoothly, and our guide was incredibly likeable and informative. Although we only mentioned our wish for a Schwedeneisbecher (a local ice cream sundae) at short notice, this stop was built into the tour. That shows how spontaneous, individual and client-focused adebar is.

  • What your team put together for GECKO's 33rd birthday was amazing! The venue was simply fantastic, every single detail was lovingly designed, and working with you was so relaxed that we had a great deal of fun.

  • For our Chapter Summit 2021, adebar organised and ran the “raft building” event. In the end there were around 60 adults and children. The adebar team adapted wonderfully to this challenge, and the event was a complete success.
